Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise at the age of just a young girl. The aunt worked as an overnight nursing assistant in order to provide her with the opportunity to study art literature or theater. The aunt introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay was taught by her mother that the arts can serve to promote activism. Her mother was also a the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay to express herself via artwork. DuVernay was born in Compton with her parents but spent the summers with Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family has been for generations. Her father recalled watching the civil rights march of the past along the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay visited Selma during the summer months and was motivated to make a documentary about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. She attended University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay started broadcasting journalism at the age of a young student. Her first job was as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given the responsibility of looking over the home and looking through the trash from one of the jury. The duties she was required to perform left her dissatisfied and so, after deciding not to continue in journalism, she shifted to the field of public relations. DuVernay began her first position as a publicist at small production studios right out of school. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. In addition to PR, the company developed several lifestyle websites like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
